Why Solar Energy

Solar energy makes a lot of sense for Myanmar for several economic, environmental, and practical reasons

1. Abundant Sunshine

  • Myanmar gets 5–6 peak sun hours per day in many regions, especially central and southern areas.

  • Dry zones like Mandalay, Magway, and Sagaing have some of the highest solar irradiation in Southeast Asia.

  • This means solar panels can produce electricity very efficiently year-round.

2. Rural Electrification Needs

  • As of recent years, millions of households—especially in rural and off-grid areas—still lack reliable electricity.

  • Solar home systems or mini-grids can provide power without waiting for the national grid to expand.

3. Energy Security & Independence

  • Myanmar currently relies on hydropower and natural gas. Hydropower can be unreliable in dry seasons, and gas depends on finite resources.

  • Solar reduces dependence on imported fuel and seasonal rainfall.

4. Lower Costs Over Time

  • Solar installation costs have dropped globally by more than 80% in the last decade.

  • Once installed, solar systems have very low operating costs—no need to buy fuel.

5. Environmental Benefits

  • Solar power has zero emissions during operation.

  • Helps reduce deforestation (less need for firewood) and air pollution from diesel generators.

6. Hybrid Solutions for Reliability

  • Solar can be combined with batteries and small diesel backups for 24/7 power.

  • Useful for remote schools, clinics, and businesses that need stable electricity.
